Blood and Salsa / Painting Rust
In 2005 I designed twin chapbooks, Blood and Salsa and Painting Rust, designed to be printed together in one volume (flip the book to one side, and you’d see the cover of Blood and Salsa; flip it over, and you’d get the cover of Painting Rust). After a tiff with a publisher, I decided to self-publish. Although there were some intensely problematic passages, the books were well-reviewed, acquiring a significant amount of critical ink from folks like Tom Bradley, Christopher Robin, and Mary Jo Malo.
The author of these poems was selfish and immature, and it shows. Still, I think there’s some interesting turns of phrase, and some unusual perspectives on human behavior. Before I got mad at my publisher, they called it “contemplative but insane,” which I took as very high praise.
I printed these myself, and I doubt you can find a physical copy, but you can download them at the Unlikely Books web site.
