Standards of Sadiddy
The word “sadiddy” is almost synonymous with “bougie,” but often carries an additional connotation of sadistic, or at least unempathetic and indifferent. A fellow white person once attempted to review Standards of Sadiddy and focused almost entirely on the title, which, upon study, she concluded was a newfangled slang word reserved for use by Black and brown people. This is not my experience. The word “sadiddy,” like yours truly, is Southern, with origins in Southern AAVE dating back to well before my birth.
Standards of Sadiddy is a 52-page book that, like all of my more recent poems, took years to write. It is also my oldest book that was clearly and identifiably written by a real adult (albeit a ridiculous one). It was published by Jane L. Carmen of Lit Fest Press in 2016, with jacket copy by poets Gloria Mindock, Carolyn Hembree, and the late Yuriy Tarnawsky. Lit Fest Press was an outgrowth of Jane’s massive Lit Fest reading series, and although the reading series and the press are now retired, Jane kept the book in print.
You can purchase this book from any online bookstore, and indeed, you should.
